Notes

  • Note*: Commonly stated on the web without source citation:
    b. 22 July 1772, Virginia, son of Edmund Gibson Taylor & his wife Sarah Stubbs
    d. 15 Apr 1839, Bullitt County, Kentucky
    m. 7 Feb 1797, Frederick Co., Virginia
  • Note: Edmund Haynes Taylor (1772-1839), President Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) and President James Madison (1651-1836) are all 2nd cousins, through their great-grandfather James Taylor (1674-1729).2
  • Note: Served in U.S. Army in the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795):
    1) He appears in the list of "Provisional Ensigns" in General Anthony Wayne's army (Roster). And was commissioned Ensign 21 Nov 1793 (H.D. Taylor, p. 92).
    2) At the Indian attack at Fort Recovery, 30 June 1794, fifty dragoons were commanded by Ensign or Lieutenant [sources vary] Edmund Taylor.
    3) The Indiana Historical Society web site has an image of a document signed July 6 1794 by Ensign Edmund H. Taylor.
    4) He was commissioned Captain and later Major by President John Adams (H.D. Taylor, p. 92).
    5) This compiler found no confirmation of the often repeated assertion that "Major Taylor was in command of the Territory of Indiana at one time" (H.D. Taylor, p. 92)
    6) Nor did this compiler find any confirmation of the often repeated assertion that "Major Edmund H. Taylor...at one time was in command of Harper's Ferry" (History of Henderson County).3,4
  • Note: Major Edmund Taylor held the position of 'Receiver of Public Monies' at the Jeffersonville, Indiana, land office.
This position required nomination by the US President with approval of the Senate. Thomas Jefferson first nominated him 28 Feb 1807 to be receiver at Detroit. But Taylor's supporters intervened, the nomination was withdrawn, and resubmitted 2 Dec 1807, to be at Jeffersonville.
The Russell W. Curtis paper mentions Taylor numerous times; land office regulations were evolving to limit currency transactions favorable to Receivers, and ties to land speculators.
In 1815 Taylor requested permission to reside in Louisville with his family [just across the Ohio River from Jeffersonville]. The request was denied.
The Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of the United States shows he received $25,848.28 in 1809, $283,733.90 in 1819. The last year he was listed was 1820.5,6,7,8
  • Note: Probate:
    1) Undocumented WorldConnect postings state that Major Edmund H. Taylor died in 1839, Bullitt Co., Kentucky.
    2) The FamilySearch catalog has a link to a digital copy of Bullitt Co. Wills, Index of Wills, 1838-1846, Vol. C, which has entries for Edmund H. Taylor, with appraisers appointed 10 June 1839. The 'index' has copies of that appointment and of appraisal and sale of personal goods at his residence. It does not have any indication of a will. The inventory was appraised 9 Sept 1839, for a total of $2,169, including three slaves at $1,700. The account of sale of property sold at the residences, sold 29 June 1839, $216.70.
