- Note*: "...Josias Furman, who, with a brother John, came hither [Newtown] from Hempstead, L.I., during Gov. Stuyvesant's time. These are supposed to have been the sons of John Furman, from Wales, who became a freeman in Mass., in 1631. The Welsh origin of the Newtown Furmans, is a matter of tradition. ..."2
